Dionne Powell

Bereavement, loss & grief specialist

If you are feeling overwhelmed or struggling after a bereavement or loss, I can help. Grief comes after all sorts of loss and can leave us numb or very emotional and tearful. It is at this time that counselling can give you the safe space to talk it all out, to ask questions and be reassured, to be helped to learn strategies to manage difficult emotions and to get through daily challenges. Talking confidentially can help share your grief. I can help you with anything linked to grief and loss.

About me and my practice

I became a bereavement counsellor because I see the profound impact counselling has with loss and grief. The difference counselling can make in this area is huge and this is one of the reasons I find being a specialist with loss and grief so rewarding.

I notice that when we are at our most vulnerable, it can be so helpful to have someone to listens - and accepts or experience without any judgement.

My clients also find it very reassuring meeting with me. They say they are reassured hearing that their experiences are not unusual (whilst still quite unique to them).

What I offer in my practice is very bespoke to each situation. There is no one size fits all. I listen and we decide a way that matches your needs.

For example, sone clients often ask for support to go through the accepting and feeling stage of loss and grief - itself often traumatic and painful. I use mindfulness, breath work and EFT tapping to help you to care for your body and the exhaustion that is often present. Expressing feelings can be supported so you will feel less overwhelmed.

Other clients might want sessions to focus around disappointment, anger, resentment or their deep sadness. Some clients want to reflect on letting go more. We might work with reframing, problem solving options and specific issues around a loss which may be sone time after e.g distress around anniversaries, or trust, shame or regrets.

There are many possibilities but my aim in my work is to achieve the outcomes you want so you can feel more secure and steady again.

Clients tell me I am very insightful about grief and loss and that I am hugely empathic and compassionate. I am real/very human and easy to talk with.

I have experienced significant losses in my own life and had counselling around complex grief so I understand how hard adapting can be. I think this lived experience makes me a better therapist for you.

Ultimately I am here to support you each week with whatever you bring.

Experience

I volunteer for a national bereavement charity and can work with adults, children and young people.

I have my own private practice since 2021 and specialise in grief and loss but also support clients with anxiety and trauma. Before setting up my own practice, I worked in schools supporting pupils with emotional difficulties and also supporting vulnerable adults.

I am a qualified therapeutic mindfulness teacher and tapping practitioner able to teach you these skills, if you wish. Both are clinically effective with a variety of issues around grief, loss, emotional pain and anxiety.

I teach student counsellors and run bereavement retreats. I am suicide and trauma aware and have undertaken lots of extra training and research in these areas.

Qualifications

I am a qualified counsellor with a Diploma in Therapeutic counselling. I have additional qualifications in grief work, mindfulness and teaching.
